Heritage Summer and Heritage Sunday 2009Heritage Sunday began some years ago as a way of being able to sing the hymns we grew up with. The day itself was based on my experiences as a child in Tennessee. When our local church hosted the Church of Christ (Holiness) District Diocesan Convention, the weekend was filled with lots of good preaching and singing. The church was crowded with people and you could hear the service going on before you even got out of the car. The neighborhood really woke up. There was lots and lots - and lots - of food and fellowship, so much that we spilled out onto the church grounds. We children loved it! Ascension is blessed with many members from diverse backgrounds. We all have our memories of especially meaningful hymns that we don't often hear anymore. That's what Heritage Summer is all about. Fill out the form in your bulletin, and tell us a little about why the hymn is special to you. Then, beginning July 5th we will start singing these hymns. Hopefully, we will all enjoy the message of the hymns and rejoice with those who chose them. On the last Sunday of July, the 26th, we will end the hymns saying with a "picnic on the grounds" inside. Join us! Gwen D. |
