St. Fiacre and Rally DayOn Sunday, September 13, there will be only one worship service at 10:30 a.m., and there will be two other events! We will be blessing a statue of St. Fiacre, in memory of Wallace Delia, and we will hold Rally Day. St. WHO, you may ask? St. Fiacre is the patron saint of gardeners. He was an Irish monk, who is best known for his time in France. While in France, he performed the miracle required for sainthood, by clearing land for his garden simply by dragging his shovel across the soil he intended to clear. St. Fiacre's Gardens were beautiful and he grew many medicinal herbs and plants. Although he sought solitude, many sought him out for healing and he served those who came to him. Rally Day is an annual event at Ascension where all our different ministries display information (and sign-up sheets) in a festive and social atmosphere. It also serves as the "kick-off" for stewardship, and is the opportunity to ask those questions you have wanted to ask about how to get involved in a particular ministry. How are these two seemingly unrelated events, the blessing of the statue and Rally Day, related? There are few finer examples of healing and servanthood than of Wallace Delia. Wallace healed us with his vision of beauty which is always evident in our beautiful grounds. His willingness to serve God, his Church family, and the greater community is something we can all aspire to. We will remember Wallace as we bless the statue of St. Fiacre. We would do well to remember his example of healing and servanthood as we consider, on Rally Day, which ministries our talents would best serve. Barbara H. |
