SWEEPS... Stewardship, Worship, Evangelism, Education, Parish life, and Services. This is our church's operational structure. Stewardship is the first structure named. Without Stewardship (financial) support of our congregation, we would be unable to implement the above structure. It is important to remember that Stewardship is more than our money. It also includes our talents, our time, and our environment.

During these hard economic times, it can be a real challenge to deal with your own budget, much less even think about the parish budget. We all have the responsibility to ask questions, know where the money is spent, and know how the budget is developed.

The budgeting process begins after all the pledges are in and is initiated by the finance committee. The committee reviews the pledge total for the coming year and looks at the other projected income (i.e. gumbo, rent, plate, etc.) A draft budget is prepared balancing the expenses to the income and presented to the Vestry for their input and approval at the December meeting. The Finance Committee welcomes any questions, concerns, and suggestions regarding the budget. Our current pledge status is moving toward a deficit for this year so next year will be interesting, to say the least.

In a recent issue of Vestry Paper, the following statement was written (slightly modified so it would be more applicable to us): "Pledges, plate, gumbo, and other income are not just dollars on a spreadsheet; they are gifts from the people of God. Likewise expenses are not just dollars going out for payroll, benefits, or other church operations, but dollars working in the service of the people of God for the building of Christian community."

The Ascension family is a strong and loving community we have weathered many a storm, reaching inward and outward for support. Our attitude is "yes, we can." This winning attitude is the key to a successful pledging year for 2010. Remember... "all things come of the, O Lord, and of thine own we have given thee."
