Wow! It has been a great year for children's education at Ascension! We have undergone a few changes this year in anticipation of developing a growing program, and we are pleased with the success we have experienced!
Volunteers worked quickly to create a newer, larger classroom with more work space and more craft storage and organization space for our lesson materials. Thanks to the volunteers' hard work, we began the school year with a brand-new clean, organized, and cheerful space in which we could easily work and play.
We also selected a new curriculum that has worked very well for the kids. In addition to lectionary-based Bible stories, the curriculum includes fun songs, prayers, activities and crafts, and reinforcement lessons to encourage the kids to apply the lessons to their own lives. The curriculum has been successful in that our children prove weekly that they have a growing interest in our world shaped by God and that they are able to think deeply about God's gifts to us and our actions in return.
A new room and new curriculum are not the only joys we have experienced this year—we also have welcomed new children to our growing program! We enjoyed seeing new faces at the Happy Birthday, Jesus party and Easter egg hunt and we appreciate having new children visit with us every Sunday.
Although ARK Sunday School/Children's Chapel normally ends at the end of May, we have decided to continue children's Sunday school activities throughout the summer. During the summer classes, children will be working in a VBS-style environment to learn the "basic" Bible stories that we all remember from our childhood.
