July 2010 - Heritage Month - Ascension, Hattiesburg

I've been singing in church all my life. Not surprising, since my father was a Southern Baptist Minister of Music. My earliest clear memory of church is of sitting beside my grandmother at Shiloh Baptist in Saraland, Alabama while we sang 'Leaning on the Everlasting Arms.' I can still hear her voice.

When I was about six, I spent part of my summer vacation with my Aunt Johnnie, who played organ at her church. She promptly set me in front of the congregation to sing 'Amazing Grace'- my first solo. I don't remember anything about the singing, but Johnnie was pleased enough to treat me to homemade ice cream afterward.

So what about you? What songs do you remember, and want to hear again? Please let us know by filling out the form in the narthex, and be sure to tell us why you picked it and what it means to you. It's a way to get to know each other and celebrate our heritage, whatever it may be.

And to kick things off, on July 3rd we'll hold our first ever Ascension Summer Carnival, 8am – noon. Bring the kids and grandkids, we'll have games (indoor and outdoor) for all ages and activity levels, and plan to wrap up with some grilled hamburgers and hotdogs. Bring sides dishes and desserts, and give Heritage Month the best start ever!

Peace,
Vance
