Son Rise - May, 2011

At Ascension, OUTREACH is part of the Service segment of SWEEPS. Generally it means what Ascension does in the community at large, both near and far.

Ascension helped start Bread Basket in 1981 with Jane as our representative and we have been a partner for these 30 years. Over the years we have also sponsored an after school program for children, hallelujah housing to improve living conditions and paid utility bills for those in need. All these we did jointly with other churches in the community.

Currently we continue with Bread Basket, provide funds for Episcopal Relief & Development, Gray Center, Camp Bratton-Green, Salvation Army, Bishop Masereka's scholarship program and Sewanee seminary to extend Ascension's outreach.

In your Sunday bulletin on May 1, you will receive a copy of United Way agencies in need of Ascension's and your dollars, talents, and volunteers. What role should Ascension play in this important work? And what role should you play? And more importantly what would God have us do?

God tells us to "LOVE OUR NEIGHBOR." Love to our neighbors in the great commandment is to assist, help, mentor, console, and immerse ourselves by living in community with those less fortunate than us.

Ask God what to do. He will tell you and you will be rewarded. His Son said "love your neighbor as yourself." Matthew 22:39; Mark 12:31; Luke 10:27; Romans 13:9; Galatians 5:14 and James 2:8.
