Summer School at Ascension - Son Rise, June 2011

The dictionary defines heritage as what is or what may be handed on to a person from ancestors, such as land, a trust, beliefs, or customs.

The Ascension Tuesday Morning Bible Study Group has started The Essential 100 Bible Reading Plan. In reading Genesis I realized just how in the beginning God chose simple ordinary people to do great things in his kingdom.

Having a "flash-back" of when Ascension began its mission, I remembered most of the faces and names of the approximately twenty nine families who came together for this endeavor. There were people of all walks of life, a nurse, business men, an architect, a landscaper, college professors, a lawyer, secretaries, housewives, children, in short, people in the prime of their lives as well as some retirees.

These wonderful, caring, determined and sacrificing souls came together with their rich talents and customs and above all their strong love of God to make Ascension what it is today! Much imagination has gone into many money raising projects. There have been horse shows, bridge parties, bazaars, rummage sales, home made fruit cake sales, hand crochet afghan and hand made clock raffles, all for the building of Ascension and its outreach programs. We introduced the art of crawfish head sucking to Hattiesburg and no one can touch Ascension gumbo, not even with a ten foot pole!

There have been "lean" times, both spiritual and monetary in Ascension history, but God has always prevailed and had a plan for us to survive. Just take a long hard look at how we began and then where we are today. It is truly remarkable at the vast in-reach and out reach services accomplished by such a few, all in the love of God and with the will to serve.
